So what was the Wonder Woman of the 1970s up to in 1977, while both her own comic and her backup feature in World’s Finest were only telling stories set during World War II, taking their cue from the Lynda Carter TV show? Well, the modern-day WW was still appearing regularly in Justice League of America (and Super Friends, but that was based on the cartoon and wasn’t quite in continuity), despite DC’s editorial stance that it would be confusing for new readers to have her in the 1940s on TV and the present day in the comics. Really, they were just trying to have it both ways.

The Twelve Labors of Wonder Woman continue, with various Justice League of America members monitoring her adventures and reporting back on whether they find her worthy to rejoin the JLA after a long absence and bout of amnesia. Unlike the other issues in this story arc, Wonder Woman #218 is split into two separate stories, each with a different Leaguer narrating. But writer Martin Pasko and artist Kurt Schaffenberger are really scraping the bottom of the membership barrel with these twin tales hosted by C-list Leaguers the Red Tornado and the Phantom Stranger.

This is so strange to say that I can hardly believe it as I type it, but Wonder Woman has never headlined an intercompany crossover comic. Even during the period when DC and Marvel were crossing over so often that you had such B- and C-list matchups as Darkseid/Galactus, Team X/Team 7 and Green Lantern/Silver Surfer, Wonder Woman got no play.

I’ve avoided talking about this as long as I could, but the recent news that DC is launching a new Superman/Wonder Woman series has forced my hand. I’ve been a DC Comics fan since the mid-1970s, which necessitates a certain tolerance for reboots and retcons, but I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m no fan of the current “New 52” relaunch of all DC’s titles, in which only Batman and Green Lantern continued more or less unchanged and everyone else’s history was rewritten.
