You Can’t Fight Uncle Sam

First I just want to say that this week I got some pretty exciting Wonder Woman news. There’s going to be another Wonder Woman series in addition to her own comic and Superman Loves Wonder Woman or whatever that one’s called. Coming up in August is Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman, an anthology title featuring Wonder Woman stories outside of New 52 continuity (thank Hera for that!), and first up is one of my faves, writer Gail Simone! So it’s like Adventures of Superman or Legends of the Dark Knight, in that an ever-changing group of creators can just tell Wonder Woman stories without worrying about how they fit into the current status quo. Coming after the horrific news that David Finch (who had the honor of creating the hands-down worst of the new Batman series and whose depiction of Wonder Woman already became a popular object of internet mockery) will be taking over the main Wonder Woman title after Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang finish up their arc, this new announcement is a breath of fresh air. Sensation Comics is the first bit of Wonder Woman-related good news I’ve heard in a while.

This time writer Martin Pasko and artists Jose Delbo and Vince Colletta give us a two-part story in two issues, which was a fairly rare thing back in 1976. Nowadays, of course, it’s standard practice to spread a single story out over six, twelve or even 20-odd issues, but back in the ’70s single issues tended to have self-contained stories. So what’s so special about “A Life in Flames”? Well, let’s see.

A little while ago, when I was writing about the nonsuperpowered
“mod” era of Wonder Woman in the late 1960s, I included various team-ups and guest appearances she made in other series, as collected in the four Diana Prince: Wonder Woman trade paperbacks. But they and I omitted to mention perhaps the most notable team-up that Diana made during that period, a clash of the titans such as we’ve never seen before, in which Wonder Woman meets…Jerry Lewis?! The Twelve Labors are over and Wonder Woman’s back in the Justice League. We’re also back in the realm of issues that have never been reprinted, and will be for quite some time; none of the issues between mid-1976 and 1987 have been collected in trade paperbacks. We’re also settling into a period with Martin Pasko as the regular Wonder Woman writer. He’d written the last five issues of The Twelve Labors and would go on to write the next nine issues of Wonder Woman after that. Read more
