As of May 1977, with Wonder Woman’s TV show in full swing, the Amazon heroine was appearing regularly not just in her own comic and various team comics (Justice League of America, Super Friends) but also started having bimonthly solo adventures in World’s Finest. This had for decades been a Superman/Batman buddy series, and the front feature still fit that description, but it became an 80-page “dollar comic” (up from the previous 30 cents) with four different back-up features, including Wonder Woman. The others were Green Arrow, Black Canary, and the Vigilante.

I’ve written at length already about why I’m not a fan of the New 52, DC Comics’ linewide relaunch that’s been the status quo since 2011. One of the things I particularly dislike is what’s been done with Superman. While a few other characters such as Batman and Green Lantern continued more or less where they left off, Superman was rebooted entirely. He has a silly costume redesign, he’s younger and “edgier,” and his marriage to Lois Lane never happened. In fact, now he’s going out with Wonder Woman.

Oh hey, it’s the Third of July! Maybe I should do this here comic with Uncle Sam on the cover, because that seems patriotic. And it has two beloved heroes on the cover facing off in their patriotic costumes of red, blue and, um, yellow.

I’ve avoided talking about this as long as I could, but the recent news that DC is launching a new Superman/Wonder Woman series has forced my hand. I’ve been a DC Comics fan since the mid-1970s, which necessitates a certain tolerance for reboots and retcons, but I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m no fan of the current “New 52” relaunch of all DC’s titles, in which only Batman and Green Lantern continued more or less unchanged and everyone else’s history was rewritten.

There have been a number of stories over the years that have toyed with the idea of Superman and Wonder Woman becoming a couple, sometimes with Lois Lane and maybe Steve Trevor looking on in dismay. Heck, quite recently in Geoff Johns’s Justice League series, Supes and WW got to smooching, but of course in the New 52 relaunch, for worse or for worse, Superman and Lois Lane aren’t even a couple.
