Wonder Woman fans have had a tough time lately. First we get the news that Wonder Woman would finally make her live action movie debut… but only as one of many characters in the Batman vs. Superman movie (you know, the one with Ben Affleck as Batman), along with Aquaman and Cyborg. The word is that a Wonder Woman solo movie is somewhere in the queue of the DC Cinematic Universe movies that DC is building off of Man of Steel, sometime after the Justice League movie. (Couldn’t they hold off on their mammoth let’s-copy-Marvel master plan until they’d gotten one movie right, maybe?) Who knows, maybe they’ll make Aquaman and Cyborg movies first. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman actually made her feature film debut earlier this year. Where? In The Lego Movie. Seriously, after 73 years, that was her first time on the silver screen.

A few weeks back I talked about how Gail Simone got me back into Wonder Woman after a long lapse. Last week I explored some of the parts of the run I wasn’t quite on board with, with the introduction of the big bad killing machine Genocide. A whole lot happened in that arc—the Olympian gods came back after a few years away, the Amazons were awakened from the amnesiac exile they’d been cursed into after Amazons Attack!, Zeus created a whole new male race of Manazons to supplant the Amazons, and Wonder Woman killed Ares and foreswore her gods.

52 Pickup

As anyone who pays any attention to comic books already knows, this month DC Comics relaunched its entire line of comics, restarting them all from number 1. Well, not all: Some titles were discontinued, and a number of new ones are starting that weren’t there before. But in one month, DC is restarting from scratch with 52 new series. Even Detective Comics–which was the longest-running comic published in the United States, introduced Batman and gave the company its name–ended at issue #881 and now starts over. Action Comics, which introduced Superman in its #1 in 1938, similarly goes from issue #904 to square one. So on that level alone, it feels like the end of an era.
