It’s hard to believe it’s coming up this soon, but THIS WEDNESDAY a short play of mine is playing in the San Francisco Olympians Festival! It’s actually the first night of the festival, and the theme of the evening is

Nymphs, Nymphs, Nymphs!: eight short plays about nymphs by eight local writers. My topic is Nereids, sea nymphs, but the play’s really about Calypso and the epic face-off between her and Penelope when the long-suffering wife comes looking for her husband. It’s part of a full-length play I’ve been working on, The Weavers, all about Penelope, Circe and Calypso (played here by Teri Whipple, Fatima Zahra El-Filali, and Xanadu Bruggers, respectively). Ellen’s Honored

I can’t quite believe this, but the humble staged reading of my very first play, Ellen’s Undone, in the SF Olympians Festival made Marissa Skudlarek’s list of 2013’s Most Memorable Theater Moments on the San Francisco Theater Pub blog! I’m amazed and honored. But it’s really a testament to the great work that director Mina Morita and actors Maggie Mason and Armando McClain did in bringing my talky script to life. Not a bad end to a dizzying experience.

Suddenly an Artist

On November 22 I’m going to make my playwriting debut as part of the San Francisco Olympians Festival, with a staged reading of my Helen of Troy play Ellen’s Undone at the Exit Theatre, directed by Mina Morita and starring Maggie Mason and Armando McClain. I wrote a blog post for  Theatre Bay Area on what a strange experience it’s been to suddenly play at being a theater artist after so long as strictly a critic, so go check it out.
